Football: Real Madrid beat Ajax in Champions League last 16, first leg

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Real Madrid needed a late winner from Marco Asensio and VAR's debut in the Champions League to beat a spirited Ajax 2-1 in the first leg of the last 16 on Wednesday (Feb 13).
Ajax have not beaten Madrid in 24 years and thought they were on their way at the Johan Cruyff Arena when Nicolas Tagliafico headed home after a Thibaut Courtois error.
But referee Damir Skomina judged Dusan Tadic to be offside upon review and Madrid showed no pity on their youthful opponents, Karim Benzema and Asensio scoring two precious away goals in the second half.
Hakim Ziyech's equaliser at least keeps Ajax in touch heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu but Asensio's 87th-minute winner was a sucker-punch in a match the Dutch team had largely dominated.
Their ruled out opener will likely only add to the sense of what might have been and it was no surprise to see a cluster of red and white shirts surrounding the officials at the final whistle.
VAR has been introduced to the Champions League for the first time in this year's knock-out stages and leaflets were distributed to the media before kick-off, one of the points explaining that reviews should only be made for "clear and obvious mistakes".
Tadic's intervention on Courtois was minimal and even if he was just offside, it seemed generous to judge he had made enough of an impact on the goalkeeper to be penalised.
Still, there was more than an hour to play and Ajax were twice too easily undone on the counter-attack. Frenkie de Jong, who will join Barcelona in the summer, and Matthijs de Ligt, who could follow him, were each dealt a harsh lesson in the ruthlessness of top European football.
Gareth Bale was reinstated to the Madrid starting line-up but there was no place for Marcelo, who missed his first Champions League knock-out game in four years.

TADIC HITS POST

Ajax fans had put on an impressive display of fireworks late on Tuesday night outside the Spanish team's hotel and perhaps it paid off because Madrid were run ragged in the first half.
Courtois skewed an early clearance, Casemiro miscontrolled and Bale swung a frustrated kick at De Jong's shin.
Tadic had the first chance as Sergio Reguilon's poor pass was headed into his path, a sliced finish beating Courtois' right hand but not the post.
The best opportunity fell to the excellent Donny van de Beek, after the ball was shifted along the line like a rugby move until the midfielder was left spare six yards out. Courtois saved with his legs.
Hero one minute, villain the next, Courtois then fumbled De Ligt's header from the corner and Tagliafico headed in. There was no protest from Courtois but Skomina pointed to his earpiece. Tadic had brushed past Courtois as the header looped in and was deemed offside.
The crowd jeered at half-time and Benzema compounded their misery soon after. It was a goal to sum up Madrid's resurgence in recent weeks as Luka Modric flicked a ball for Vinicius Junior to race after. He tore past one, jinked inside two more and teed up Benzema, who found the top corner.
Ajax refused to fade. David Neres and Tadic both went close before Neres skipped free down the left and crossed for Ziyech to slide in the equaliser. Madrid wanted a free-kick for a foul on Lucas Vazquez in the build-up but this time the goal stood.
A draw might have appeased the home fans but they were denied even that as a slick move through midfield freed Dani Carvajal down the right. His cross found Asensio, who could not miss.

We 'won't slip up this time'

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has insisted his team are driven in their pursuit of the Premier League title by the pain of last season's Champions League final and not a slip-up against Chelsea five years ago.
Dismissing any link between today's crucial fixture at Anfield and Chelsea's visit at a similar stage of the 2013-14 season, when a 2-0 defeat derailed their title ambitions, the Liverpool manager feels "it is not important to talk about what happened as it is too long ago".
The 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in Kiev last May, however, is still fresh in the memory, with Klopp admitting their determination to make amends has been a factor in their title tilt this term.
Ahead of today's match - his 200th fixture in charge - he said: "We have enough reasons to be positive about ourselves. This season, it was already different when we came back because of the negative things we experienced ourselves in the last game of last season.
"The boys did really good so far and that is why we are still in the fight for the championship. That has nothing to do with other games.
"There will be nervy moments, difficulties in the game, but in this moment, we all looked ready for dealing with it and that is why I am happy with that."

  • 2012

The last time Chelsea lost at Anfield (4-1). It is Liverpool's longest home run without winning against any opponent in the Premier League.

His team's growing "maturity" in the run-in can also be seen in the intensity of Liverpool's recent displays, with Klopp attributing their step-up to his players "using each fibre as it is the last part of the season and in the last 100m, you go with all you have".
The German said: "What I really want to ask for is that all of us are in a real fighting mood, all at Anfield and whoever is in front of the TV, in a proper aggressive, positive mood. Go for whatever we can go for."
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, one of the few survivors from the 2013-14 squad, echoed his boss' assertion that what happened five years ago had little bearing on this campaign, with Klopp's men faring far better in defence compared with Brendan Rodgers' team.
The England midfielder, who missed that game due to suspension, added: "We still had that belief when we were going for the title a few years ago, but the biggest difference is the clean sheets and defensive record. That season, we conceded quite a few goals though we might have been winning games. We weren't as strong as we would have liked to have been."
However, Klopp conceded that Chelsea, who are unbeaten in their last eight visits to Liverpool in all competitions and whose last league defeat on Merseyside dates back to 2012, are "in a good moment".
He added: "From the first second, we have to be a completely different opponent to all the others they have faced in recent weeks."
But, while Maurizio Sarri's players will be hopeful of extending their fine record at Anfield - Liverpool's longest winless run against an opponent - they will be wary of the home team riding the crest of a wave of emotion.
Not only will there be a tribute to the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster, a day before its 30th anniversary, but the crowd will also be paying their respects to former captain Tommy Smith, who died on Friday at the age of 74.
Calling him an "icon", pundit and former teammate Phil Thompson told Sky Sports: "Liverpool owe this guy a debt of gratitude. He drove the team, he was incredible."

Football: Barca give fresh hope to La Liga rivals after Bilbao stalemate

BILBAO, SPAIN (AFP) - Lionel Messi was short of fitness and Barcelona lacked spark as a goalless draw away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday (Feb 10) offered fresh hope to their rivals in the title race.
A thigh injury had limited Messi to 27 minutes against Real Madrid on Wednesday and while he played the full match at San Mames, Barca's assistant coach Jon Aspiazu had admitted before kick-off he was not yet 100 per cent.
In all likelihood, he stayed on because his team needed him but Messi was not at his best and neither were Barcelona, who would even have lost had it not been for Marc Andre ter Stegen's stunning late save to deny Inaki Williams.
The draw makes it three games without a win for La Liga's leaders, whose advantage is still six points but now with Real Madrid their closest challengers, after they beat Atletico on Saturday.
That was Real's fifth league victory on the bounce and just as they have gained momentum, Barca appear to be losing theirs, at a crucial juncture, with more stern tests to come.
After Real Valladolid at home next weekend, Ernesto Valverde's side travel to Lyon in the Champions League and Sevilla in the league. They then face two Clasicos in four days, one in the Copa del Rey, and both at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Injuries have not helped. Messi was picked but not fully recovered while Ousmane Dembele was fit enough only for the bench, having shaken off an ankle injury.
The struggling Philippe Coutinho retained his place alongside Luis Suarez and Messi up front but Arturo Vidal came in for the injured Arthur Melo and Nelson Semedo started at left back, with Jordi Alba suspended.
Bilbao had the better of the early stages as Yuri Berchiche flashed just wide after a poor pass from Vidal while Markel Susaeta's drive forced the leaping Ter Stegen into an acrobatic save.
Barcelona settled into the game but were never in control. Still, they twice should have scored, with Messi and Suarez both guilty of missing.
First, Suarez peeled free at the back post but glanced wide from Messi's cross and then Messi hit the crossbar, the goal gaping after Iago Herrerin had rushed out to intercept Nelson Semedo.
The game was frantic and Bilbao were more than holding their own. Raul Garcia's finish was blocked and Mikel San Jose's effort whistled inches outside of the post.
In between, Barca had enjoyed their best spell at the start of the second half but the gaps always seemed to close around the penalty area and they struggled to find a way through.
Dembele replaced Coutinho with just over 10 minutes left but Bilbao had the best chance to win it. Iker Muniain squared for Williams, who looked certain to score after wriggling free of Gerard Pique. Instead, Ter Stegen shot out his right hand, somehow denying the striker from eight yards.
De Marcos received a second yellow card in injury-time for a handball but there was no time for Barce to feel the benefit. Bilbao held on.

Europa League hat-trick hero Giroud hoping for EPL chance

Europa League hat-trick hero Giroud hoping for EPL chance
LONDON • Olivier Giroud has not given up hope of regaining a place in Chelsea's Premier League team, with his prolific form in European competition as he seeks to extend his stay for a further year.
The Frenchman's hat-trick in last Thursday's 5-0 thrashing of Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine established him as the leading scorer in this season's Europa League, with nine goals in as many games.
Yet the striker, an £18 million (S$31.9 million) signing from Arsenal in January last year, has played only 56 minutes of top-flight football this year.
Giroud signed an 18-month contract but there is an option for Chelsea to extend his stay by a year.
Asked whether he would accept life as a substitute at the Blues, he said: "No chance. I'm a competitor and I want to play every single game and to be happy on the pitch.
"I am not picking the team, the manager makes the choices. I play in the Europa League and I am happy to help the team. The Premier League is another thing. I'm 32 but I'm still young. I feel very well physically."
Giroud, who has made only 12 Premier League starts and scored four league goals since arriving at Stamford Bridge, must now displace Gonzalo Higuain, who joined in January on a loan deal.
The 31-year-old Argentinian missed the trip to Ukraine owing to illness but should be in contention for the Premier League match at Everton's Goodison Park today.
Two goals on his third start for the club in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield suggested Higuain would not take long to find his feet.
His form since then, however, has been underwhelming. A return of just one more goal, in the win at Fulham, would be much more acceptable if the forward's all-round play was helping to bring out the best in other players around him.
There has been limited evidence of that, and there is certainly a case to be made that Giroud provides a focal point up front.
The problem for Maurizio Sarri is that the fight for a top-four finish - Chelsea have 57 points, three behind fourth-placed Arsenal - means he has little margin for error and it remains to be seen if Giroud is rewarded with a start today.

Football: Where next for Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid have an itch to scratch? China and France are options

(THE GUARDIAN) - Jose Mourinho still has a big reputation in China even if it is not as esteemed as it once was. However, the 55-year-old Portuguese manager in China would make for thrilling viewing.
Guangzhou Evergrande failed to make it eight out of eight Chinese Super League titles this year and Fabio Cannavaro has not been able to convince everyone at the club.
Mourinho has the stature to follow Marcello Lippi and Luiz Felipe Scolari at Guangzhou and the club have the money and ambition to be interested. Fans and the media would love his combative style, something that has not been seen in Asia before, although few think he would come so far east.
It would be a major surprise were Mourinho to get another job in England. For one thing, he might not want to - Manchester United seemed to be the only available position he felt like taking on after Chelsea - but more importantly after costly failure at Old Trafford there will be few major clubs willing to take the risk.
It is important to remember Mourinho was far from an automatic choice at United: there were plenty of influential voices with reservations and after two choppy campaigns gave way to the anticipated third-season syndrome the doubters will consider themselves vindicated.
It is possibly too soon to write Mourinho off, he could easily turn up somewhere and make the best of a fresh start and a clean slate, though in England the clean slate will always be a problem.
Let's face it, the man has not looked happy in his workplace for several years now.

Unless Marseille, with their size, history and fan base, receive heavy investment in the near future, the only potentially viable French Ligue 1 destination for Mourinho is Paris Saint-Germain.
Qatar Sports Investments has often courted Mourinho since acquiring the club and he told Telefoot in 2014 he was PSG's first choice over Carlo Ancelotti in 2011 before rejecting further Parisian advances when with Real Madrid.
Although Mourinho remains highly rated by the PSG hierarchy and despite flirtations last season when Mourinho referred to PSG's talent as special and magic, their interest has cooled a little of late.
Not least owing to an admiration of Thomas Tuchel's slow yet effective evolution of the club. Even if the German's reign were to deteriorate, it is likely Mourinho would have to wait until summer 2020 for a vacancy to appear, given the capital already accrued by the German.

As for the French national team, the FFF will stick with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" adage for the foreseeable future. They are world champions after all.
In Germany, suggestions that Mourinho's free-agent status could have come at a handy time for Bayern Munich have not been slow to arrive in the conversation.
Bayern are adrift of the Bundesliga leaders, Borussia Dortmund, and with not only the manager, Niko Kovac, but major powerbrokers Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge under some pressure.
In terms of personality and profile, Mourinho clearly ticks a few boxes and Bayern's squad is stacked with the type of senior players he prefers working with.
Ideologically, however, it is not much of a fit. Mourinho's brand of football would be a tough sell to Hoeness and Rummenigge (not to mention the Allianz Arena public) at the best of times, let alone on his current run and with the team needing a jump-start.
He probably would not find a transfer budget to his liking, with the €43.5 million (S$67.9 million) spent on Corentin Tolisso from Lyon in 2017 still a club record, and the feeling is Bayern want to go bold and fresh next summer.
The most obvious landing spot for Mourinho in Italy would be with Inter: the team he led to the treble in 2010. Luciano Spalletti signed a new contract with the club at the start of this season but his failure to make it through to the Champions League knockout stage or mount a credible title challenge could provide a pretext for change.
The Nerazzurri recently hired the former Juventus CEO Beppe Marotta to shape their sporting strategy and he might also want to put his imprint on the club by naming the next manager.
Juventus themselves are happy with Massimiliano Allegri and would be unlikely to consider Mourinho in any case given the bad blood between them. Roma or Milan could conceivably have vacancies before the end of this season, but Mourinho might not be a popular choice with fans even if those clubs could find the resources to afford him.
There are only two Russian clubs who could realistically afford Mourinho: Zenit St Petersburg and Spartak Moscow.
But the Gazprom-owned Zenit have got a new manager, the fans' favourite Sergey Semak, who was appointed before the start of the season and Spartak sacked Massimo Carrera to appoint Oleg Kononov last month.
So it does not feel plausible to suggest that one of them would even consider talking to Mourinho at this stage. The other factor to take in is that the quality of the Russian league is not improving and not a single club has reached the knockout stage of the Champions League for the past three years.
Perhaps Mourinho would think the Russian league is not good enough for him.
As for the national team, Russia have just reached the World Cup quarter-finals and the Russian FA has obviously no plans to replace Stanislav Cherchesov, who costs them way less than Mourinho would, and who has already proved he can get a result with a team that cannot be described as one of the best in Russia's history.
Over in Spain, Mourinho's sacking will have caused a flash of emotion, a touch of excitement in Madrid. On the Real Madrid board there are still directors, the president included, who harbour the hope of bringing him back one day.
In moments of clarity, there is a recognition that to do so carries risks that are not advisable to take but there is a touch of forbidden fruit about him, the unrealisable dream. His name never entirely leaves their thoughts. His departure was bitter and unpleasant; his relationship with some in the dressing room broken.
Sergio Ramos, the Real captain, would not welcome him back. And yet that is one of the reasons why Florentino Perez finds the idea attractive: a part of him feels the tug of a purge. Another part wonders if it is really worth it. Not least because of the social impact, the possibility of reopening a divide.
Fans, too, are concerned at the consequences of a return: some fear his arrival, others are repelled by the idea. Yet there are others, a hard core, who would be delighted by it. Whether Mourinho would be is another matter. And if it is not Real, it cannot truly be anyone in Spain.

Low savours 'good signal'

WOLFSBURG • Germany coach Joachim Low was pleased with the "learning experience" his new-look, young team have gained after making a promising return to the international stage with a 1-1 friendly draw with Serbia on Wednesday.
The Germans, knocked out of last year's World Cup in the group stage and relegated in the Nations League, had only one player (goalkeeper Manuel Neuer) from their 2014 World Cup win in their starting line-up as they look to rebuild and improve after a disastrous 2018.
Substitute Leon Goretzka scored the equaliser in the 69th minute at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg after in-form youngster Luka Jovic had headed the Serbs ahead in the 12th.
"In the first half, the automation in this new team, playing together for the first time, did not function that well," said Low.
"But, in the second half, the team sent a very good signal that we can increase pressure and we can increase the tempo.
"We had a lot of chances and we missed the final touch a bit. That is also part of the learning experience. Overall, I am very satisfied with the mentality, the pressure we created."
It was a totally new side as Low sent world champions Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Muller into international retirement in a surprise decision last week as his team prepare to launch their Euro 2020 qualification campaign against the Netherlands in Group C on Sunday.

Germany's draw with Serbia means that they have clinched just two wins in seven matches since the 2018 World Cup.

With Kai Havertz, Julian Brandt and Leroy Sane playing behind forward Timo Werner, the hosts were more aggressive and quicker than in recent games and needed only three minutes to get a shot on target.
Serbia went ahead after 12 minutes as their first corner bounced off the back of two players to land perfectly for Jovic to head in his first international goal.
Germany were vulnerable in the first half but raised their game after the break, although they wasted several chances and were frustrated by goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic.
But they kept their foot firmly on the gas and were rewarded when Goretzka clinched the vital goal with a shot at the edge of the box.
Serbia were left with 10 players in stoppage time when Milan Pavkov was sent off for a reckless challenge on Sane.
The Manchester City winger was taken off, but Low said his injury was not too serious and he would be fit for Sunday.
"It was a vicious foul. Sane was lucky and got away with not getting hurt, but such fouls can break bones," he said.
Sane also confirmed that he was not badly injured and that the tackle "looked worse than it was".
Germany will need an even bigger effort on Sunday with a tricky match at big rivals Netherlands. Serbia also play their first qualifier that day, at title holders Portugal.
"The Netherlands have had a good development and will be a different kind of test for us," Low added.
