Football: Lukaku double inspires Man United to 3-1 win at Palace
LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku rediscovered his finishing touch in fine fashion, scoring a superb goal in each half to help them to a 3-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace on Wednesday (Feb 27).
The victory stretched United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's unbeaten league run to 11 games and boosted the Norwegian's hopes of landing the job on a permanent basis after taking over from Jose Mourinho in December.
It left United fifth on 55 points from 28 games, one behind fourth-placed Arsenal and two ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand, as the three-way race for a berth in next season's Champions League intensified.
Lukaku fired United into a 33rd minute lead with a deft finish from the edge of the penalty area after a dazzling solo run by left back Luke Shaw, who beat three Palace defenders.
The Belgium striker made it 2-0 in the 52nd with a well-taken volley from a tight angle after Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof nodded an Ashley Young corner into his path.
Right back Joel Ward pulled one back for Palace midway through the second half with a diving header before Young drilled in an unstoppable low shot in the closing stages to seal United's victory.

Stay calm, urges cancer-hit Sevilla boss
SEVILLE • In the second cancer diagnosis to hit Sevilla coaches in just two years, Joaquin Caparros revealed on Sunday that he was suffering from chronic leukaemia.
Speaking after their 2-0 LaLiga victory over Valladolid, he also announced he had yet to undergo any treatment.
However, the 63-year-old, who took over last month after Pablo Machin was sacked, reassured the home fans that the condition was under control before appealing "for everyone to stay calm".
The Spaniard told reporters: "I have caught it early and can live a normal life. I want to enjoy my job and am grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity (to continue coaching)."
Previously Sevilla's sporting director, Caparros is now acting as caretaker coach until the end of the season. His appointment has coincided with an upturn in fortunes, with the team winning four of his six games in charge.
Another former Sevilla coach, Eduardo Berizzo, announced in November 2017 that he was suffering from prostate cancer.
He was sacked a month later following a string of bad results.
The victory over Valladolid moved Sevilla up to fifth in the table after two goals in the final six minutes from Roque Mesa and Munir El Haddadi.
They are now only a point behind surprise package Getafe, who they play on April 21 after a crunch derby at home to Betis on Saturday.
Urging his players to focus on securing the goal of a Champions League spot and not to get distracted by his illness, Caparros said: "That is our objective and we are going to do everything we can to achieve it."
In response to the upsetting news, Caparros received plenty of good wishes from the football fraternity in Spain, with Athletic Bilbao, who he managed from 2007 to 2011, tweeting: "You have all our support. You are a lion and you will come out a winner."
Separately, fourth-placed Getafe kept their own remarkable bid for Champions League qualification on track by edging past Bilbao 1-0 courtesy of Angel Rodriguez Diaz's winner.

Football: Benfica teenager Joao Felix nets treble in 4-2 Europa League win over Eintracht
LISBON (REUTERS) - Benfica's 19-year-old forward Joao Felix became the youngest player to score a Europa League hat-trick as he led them to a 4-2 win over 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt in their quarter-final first leg on Thursday (April 11).
The Bundesliga side, who played with 10 men for almost an hour, were in danger of being blown away when Benfica went 4-1 up just after halftime but a second goal by substitute Goncalo Paciencia left the tie more finely balanced for the return.
Benfica coach Bruno Lage warned against getting carried away with the performance of Joao Fenix, who only made his first-team debut this season.
"If he hadn't scored tonight, everyone would have said he is off-form, but because he scored three, they say he is flying," said Lage.
"Let's take it easy, let him develop and enjoy himself. He has to go out and enjoy himself and that is what he has done. One day he will score three goals, the other he won't score any. He has to develop naturally."
Eintracht forward Luka Jovic, on loan from Benfica, missed two early chances as the Bundesliga side made a bright start before the game took a dramatic twist.
Joao Felix threaded a ball through the Eintracht defence to send Gedson Fernandes clear and he was pushed over from behind by Evan N'Dicka.
The referee judged that Fernandes had been denied a clear scoring chance, N'Dicka was sent off and Joao Felix calmly converted the penalty in the 21st minute.
Jovic equalised against his parent club in the 40th minute after Benfica were caught in possession but Joao Felix put the hosts back in front three minutes later with a low strike from 20 metres which caught keeper Kevin Trapp off guard.
Ruben Dias headed a third for Benfica after a corner was knocked on in the 50th minute and Joao Felix sidefooted the fourth four minutes later as the Eagles threatened to run riot.
Eintracht were not finished, however, and substitute Paciencia, raised at Benfica's arch-rivals Porto, put them back in the tie with a looping header from a corner in the 72nd.
"It feels like every shot they had went in despite me getting something on most of them," said Trapp.
"It's not a great feeling for a keeper because you're the one that has the responsibility to come to your team's rescue.
"We could have let our heads drop at 4-1, but we persevered and hopefully a 4-2 loss will be enough come the end of the second leg."

Football: Klopp rues missed opportunity as Liverpool settle for United draw
MANCHESTER (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool’s 0-0 draw at injury-hit Manchester United felt like a missed opportunity.Â
Klopp’s side moved one point clear at the top of the Premier League after their stalemate at Old Trafford on Sunday (Feb 24).
But it was a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool, who wasted a chance to go three points above title rivals Manchester City. The Reds managed only one shot on target and Klopp felt their erratic display was largely due to the number of injuries suffered by both teams.Â
Liverpool lost Roberto Firmino to a first half injury, while United saw Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard limp off before the interval.Â
“It was a strange game. We started really well, exactly like we wanted. Then the injury crisis started and that obviously cost us the rhythm. It was like ‘what’s going on’,†Klopp said.Â
“In the end we have to admit United played with a completely new midfield and strikers. We lost our rhythm and couldn’t get it back.Â
“It was a game without a lot of highlights. It was an intense situation. It was a point United wanted and we lost two.Â
“Some days United are beatable. You have to do it and we didn’t do it.â€
Liverpool’s second successive goalless draw came at the end of a week in which they failed to break down Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 first leg. None of Liverpool’s attacking stars shone against United, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both quiet.Â
Klopp conceded Liverpool had lacked composure at critical moments and he called on them to bounce back against Watford in midweek.Â
“I’m not here to be frustrated. I always take what I get from the boys. It doesn’t feel world-class in the moment. That’s OK,†Klopp said.Â
“We didn’t play a lot of wonderful balls in the final third. The build-up from deep was OK, but then you need to be more flexible.Â
“You need to keep the ball in the right areas, to shoot. We didn’t do it often enough.Â
“It is a point gained because we have one more than before but it doesn’t feel like that. Now Wednesday is our next game.â€
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was impressed with the way his players kept Liverpool at bay despite so many injuries.Â
“Everything that could have gone wrong in the first half went wrong. We had four injuries – we had to keep Marcus Rashford on – it seemed like it was going to be a tough afternoon,†he said.Â
“I can’t remember Liverpool having a chance. Even though they had possession, I can’t remember David de Gea making a save.â€Â

"The pressure is going to be huge - Ole will now be fighting to keep the job, rather than get it. I heard the argument that United were holding off appointing Solskjaer full-time to keep the players hungry, but there is no way they will take their foot off the pedal - these are top professionals and they have loads to play for."

Barca want to win every Cup: Suarez
MADRID • Putting on a Barcelona shirt entails an obligation "to live up to the reputation of this club, which is the best in the world" and Ernesto Valverde's men did just that as they ran out 3-0 winners at arch-rivals Real Madrid for a 4-1 aggregate victory on Wednesday.
Luis Suarez was at his clinical best as he scored twice either side of a Raphael Varane own goal, punishing Real for missing a slew of chances in the second leg of the King's Cup semi-final.
After reaching the Cup final for a sixth straight season, the Uruguay striker claimed that he and his teammates had done the club proud.
He said: "This is another demonstration of how good this team is. People keep saying that we don't care about the Cup, but we have shown that we always want to win every single trophy.
"We knew that coming to the Bernabeu would be difficult, but we were aware we had a great opportunity to play in another final."
Teammate Jordi Alba agreed with Suarez, insisting the four-time defending Cup winners "were the better team" and underlined the importance of their triumph.
He added: "We won by a big margin. We had to suffer to win, but overall, we played well.
"We really appreciate the Copa del Rey and Real Madrid wanted to win it too. A lot of their fans arrived early to create a huge atmosphere, so we will not accept the excuse that this is a minor trophy."
And Real coach Santiago Solari accepted the European champions had only themselves to blame for not taking their chances, with Vinicius Jr particularly wasteful.
While Real's best passages of play went through the Brazil Under-20 forward, he missed all six of his attempts, which left his team "going home feeling sad".
Solari said: "Football is also about how clinical you are, and while we were committed and played with energy, we did not take our chances.
"We fell with honour, but it's difficult to talk about fairness or injustice in football.
"We hope that some of the shots we missed today go in on Saturday (in the LaLiga Clasico at Real).
"In football, you have to get back on your feet immediately."
