Football: Oxlade-Chamberlain could return to training in February, says Klopp

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has confirmed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a serious knee injury and could return to training as early as February.
Oxlade-Chamberlain sustained cruciate ligament damage when going in for a tackle during their Champions League semi-final first-leg win over Italian side AS Roma at Anfield in April.
The 25-year-old underwent surgery eight days later.
He was expected to miss the entire 2018-19 campaign but Liverpool supporters were given a boost earlier this week when the English midfielder was pictured running at the club's Melwood training ground.
"(It's the) best news," Klopp told a news conference on Friday (Dec 28).
"He started going on the pitch and from the first step he looked completely normal.
"Sometimes when players are coming back from injury and start running, you see them not really limping, but it's not the picture you had in your mind. With Ox, from the first step, it looked like Ox.
"No pressure on him, but it looks like it may be February back in normal training - late February, March, so that gives us hope that he will be back this season."

MIND GAMES

Liverpool host Unai Emery's Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday as they look to remain unbeaten and maintain their six-point advantage at the top of the Premier League standings.
In his own news conference, Emery said Liverpool have all the qualities to match Arsenal's 2003-04 'Invincibles' by going the whole season unbeaten and lifting the title.
When asked if the comments were a form of mind games from his counterpart, Klopp said: "That is not the Unai Emery I know.
"This is not them waving the white flag. It will be a really tough game. We are focused on ourselves."
Fifth-placed Arsenal were the last team to take a point from Liverpool in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates last month, but Emery's side have since lost their way, dropping seven points in their last three away games.
"We were not as good as we can be defending-wise," Klopp said of the two sides' last meeting.
"They are good, strong with the ball and very lively. Their counter-attacks are crazy-quick.
"(Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang and (Alexandre) Lacazette are a good strike two. Outstanding strikers up front, quick on the wings - a really good team."

Football: Willian gem sinks Newcastle as Chelsea cement fourth place

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri warned his Chelsea stars to improve their mentality after Willian's sublime strike sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win over struggling Newcastle on Saturday (Jan 12).
Sarri's side took the lead through Pedro's early goal, but Ciaran Clark snatched a shock equaliser before half-time.
With Chelsea fans beginning to lose patience at their team's latest spluttering home display, Willian lifted the mood in the nick of time with his superb second-half curler.
Fourth-placed Chelsea have won five of their last seven league matches and sit six points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who lost at West Ham earlier on Saturday.
But, while Chelsea remain in control of the race to qualify for the Champions League, this was a far from convincing performance.
Labouring to beat third-bottom Newcastle showed how far Chelsea have to go to bridge the gap in class to leaders Liverpool and champions Manchester City.
Sarri admitted he was frustrated with the way Chelsea took their foot off the gas after the opening goal.
"We started well for 10 minutes but after the goal we thought 'now it is easy', but it wasn't," Sarri said.
"We slept for 25 minutes and then we were in trouble. We were better in the second half but we need to improve the mental reaction.
"It is very difficult to understand. We stopped playing and then we had problems."

Sarri also revealed he has told Chelsea's hierarchy he needs a new midfielder to replace Cesc Fabregas, who joined Monaco on Friday.
"Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn't a player for that position. I need an option for that position," he sad.
"The club knows very well my opinion. It depends on the club decision. I cannot do anything more."
Another winter of discontent is brewing for Newcastle, wo have won only once in their last nine league games.
The Magpies' 18 points is their lowest tally after 22 matches of a top-flight season since they were relegated in 1988-89.
"We have to be better than three teams and if we play like today we can do it," Benitez said of Newcastle's relegation battle.
Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final first leg was the latest display of attacking impotence from misfiring Chelsea, who had failed to score in their last two home league games.
But it took only nine minutes for the Blues to go in front as Newcastle's five-man defence was carved open with ease.
A fine long pass from Chelsea defender David Luiz caught Clark flat-footed.
Pedro timed his run behind Clark perfectly and held off the centre-back's weak attempt to recover as he lofted a delicate chip over Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka for his seventh goal of the season.
Chelsea dominated possession in the first half-hour, but they switched off at the back as Newcastle almost snatched an equaliser.

MASTERFUL FINISH

Salomon Rondon flicked a header towards Ayoze Perez and he accelerated away from Antonio Rudiger, only to shoot woefully wide with just Kepa Arrizabalaga to beat.
It was a warning that Sarri's men failed to heed and in the 40th minute Newcastle were level.
Matt Ritchie curled over an out-swinging corner and Clark muscled past Luiz to power a superb header past Kepa from 12 yards.
Once again, Sarri stubbornly stuck to his experiment with Eden Hazard as Chelsea's central striker despite the Belgian star's dislike of the tactic.
Hazard has now scored just four times in his last 17 games, suggesting he is much more effective in his natural role on the flanks.
With frustration mounting, a misplaced pass by Jorginho triggered angry moans from Chelsea fans, who booed the team off at half-time.
The atmosphere was on the verge of turning even more toxic until Willian came to the rescue in the 57th minute.
Teed up by Hazard at last making an incisive burst, Willian cut back inside two Newcastle defenders on the left side of the area before curling a masterful finish into the far corner.

Solskjaer laments 'poorest' performance

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United team had taken "a big step backwards" after turning in the worst display of his four-month reign, as Wolves sent them packing from the FA Cup with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
Marcus Rashford's added-time strike was not enough as Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota fired Nuno Espirito Santo's side into their first semi-final appearance since 1998.
This was United's second straight defeat and Solskjaer conceded "quite a lot was missing today" from his players, who were second-best at Molineux.
The United caretaker manager said: "It was the poorest performance we've had.
"We never had the urgency and quality on the ball, even though without the ball in the first half, we did okay.
"There was a lack of urgency going forward and a lack of forward passing and a lack of regains.
"We felt too comfortable in possession and we never managed to put their goalkeeper or defenders under pressure. Today, we got what we deserved because we never deserved to win this game."

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, interim Manchester United boss, on his team's poor display in the loss to Wolves in the FA Cup.

However, the Norwegian was still upbeat for the rest of the season, claiming that United had "much to play for" as they aim for a top-four finish in the Premier League and progression past Barcelona in the last eight of the Champions League.
He said: "We're in a great position in the league, we've got the Champions League. You can't sulk for too long. We've got to look forward and put the result today behind us.
"Manchester United in April and May always find their form. We can't wait for the challenge when Barcelona come."
While Solskjaer will not lift any domestic silverware this term, newly promoted Wolves, who had upset Liverpool in the third round, are in with a huge shout of winning their first trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1980.
And Santo, who has yet to win a major honour in his managerial career, paid tribute to "the amazing support of our fans believing in us", with the 12th man playing its part in spurring his players on against the Red Devils.
The Portuguese said: "It means a lot of course. The FA Cup is the oldest competition and we played well.
"The noise was fantastic. We achieved it together. Now, we have to prepare for the next one."
Wolves captain Conor Coady also felt it was "a deserved result" as the home side "nullified them from start to finish".
He added: "We were outstanding. They are an unbelievable club with talented players, (but) we said before in the changing rooms, we have the chance to make history and we now have the chance to go through again."

Football: Aguero penalty gives Man City 1-0 win over West Ham

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) -Sergio Aguero's penalty gave champions Manchester City a 1-0 win over West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 27) to stay a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The decisive moment came in the 59th minute when Felipe Anderson was ruled to have brought down Bernardo Silva and Aguero coolly slotted home from the spot.
Former City manager Manuel Pellegrini set his West Ham team up to frustrate the hosts and they did an excellent job for most of the game, forcing City into wide areas where they struggled to create openings.
City camped in the visitors' half for the opening 45 minutes with David Silva going close to breaking the deadlock when he hit the post after an excellent low cross.
West Ham went close after the break when substitute Manuel Lanzini found Andy Carroll at the back post, but City keeper Ederson did well to parry the forward's well-struck effort.
City boss Pep Guardiola promptly threw on Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva from the bench and they changed the tempo and flow of the game.
Second-placed City have 68 points while leaders Liverpool are on 69.

Football: Rangers out of Europa League, Eintracht fans run riot at Lazio

PARIS (AFP) - Rangers crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday (Dec 13) after falling 1-0 at Rapid Vienna, while crowd trouble sparked by Eintracht Frankfurt fans marred the German side's win at Lazio.
Steven Gerrard's Rangers, who had to win in Vienna in their final group game in order to qualify for the last 32, finish third in Group G, two points behind Rapid thanks to Dejan Ljubicic's 84th-minute winner, which sees the Austrians through to the knockout stages, level on 10 points with group winners Villarreal.
The Spaniards ensured top spot by beating bottom club Spartak Moscow 2-0 thanks to goals from Samuel Chukwueze and Karl Toko Ekambi.
Rangers came close to breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute of a match with few shots and little incident when Connor Goldson thudded a header against the bar, but Ljubicic rolled home the winner late on to seal Rangers' fate.
"We were good for 80 minutes and I couldn't ask the players to do anymore," said Gerrard.
"It is very hard for me to criticise the players for what they gave me tonight. The reality is at this level we fell a bit short."
Five Eintracht Frankfurt fans had been arrested in clashes with police in Rome ahead of their dead-rubber Group H match against Lazio as nearly 9,000 Germans swamped the Stadio Olimpico.
Eintracht had already comfortably taken top spot in the group thanks to winning all five of their previous games, while Lazio were also in the last 32 regardless of the result of the match, won 2-1 by the away side as they came back from a goal down thanks to second-half strikes from Mijat Gacinovic and Sebastien Haller.
However, German fans charged the pitch after Joaquin Correa's 56th-minute opener, and subsequently threw smoke bombs and flares at both Lazio fans and the police.
Last year's runners-up Marseille finished bottom of that group after losing 3-1 at home to Apollon Limassol and ending the group stage with just a single point.

GIROUD RESCUES POINT FOR CHELSEA

Chelsea, who had already won Group L, looked to be on their way to a perfect sixth win from six when Willian crashed home a free-kick on the half-hour mark at Vidi, but Ethan Ampadu's own goal just two minutes later gifted the hosts an equaliser.
Vidi then took the lead in the 56th minute after a blistering break, Georgi Milanov charging down the left and picking out Loic Nego, who brilliantly volleyed in the second.
However, substitute Olivier Giroud snatched a point for the Blues with a another free-kick, which the Frenchman curled off the underside of the bar to maintain his side's unbeaten group record.
"We made a lot of mistakes from the tactical point of view," said Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri.
"I am happy with the character and reaction from the second goal. From the tactical point of view we made a lot of mistakes."
BATE Borisov qualified alongside Chelsea after winning 3-1 at rock-bottom PAOK.
Malmo are in the knockout stages after snatching a 1-0 win at Besiktas that saw the Swedes leapfrog their Turkish hosts in the extremely tight Group I.
All four teams in the group were in contention for qualification on Thursday, but Genk managed to hold on to first place after hammering Sarpsborg 4-0.
Sevilla took top spot in Group J from Krasnodar thanks to a 3-0 win, while Rennes pipped Astana to the knockout rounds with a 2-0 win.

Football: Unfair? Ajax boss Ten Hag disputes Pochettino claims

Football: Unfair? Ajax boss Ten Hag disputes Pochettino claims

LONDON (REUTERS) - Sympathy was in short supply from Ajax Amsterdam manager Erik Ten Hag for injury-hit Tottenham Hotspur ahead of their Champions League semi-final first leg clash on Tuesday (April 30).
Hosts Tottenham are without a string of key players, including strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, for the game in north London and were also involved in a derby against West Ham United on Saturday while Ajax rested.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has said Ajax have an unfair advantage because the whole of the Dutch league programme was postponed to help Ten Hag's side prepare.
The straight-talking Dutchman was unimpressed, however, playing down suggestions his side were favourites.
"We get 10 million (euros) for playing in (Dutch first division) Eredivisire and they get many more millions for being in the Premier League. Is that not unfair on us?" the 49-year-old coach told reporters.
"There are always differing circumstances. Everybody has different circumstances. You just have to deal with them. That's what we do."
Midfielder Donny van der Beek, one of a crop of homegrown youngsters who have propelled four-times winners Ajax to their first Champions League semi-final since 1997, also made the point that their journey began last summer.

Ajax were actually playing in a second qualifying round tie against Austrians Sturm Graz in July, then beat Standard Liege to reach the playoffs where they overcame Dynamo Kiev.
That put them in a group containing Bayern Munich, but they emerged undefeated before beating Real Madrid in the last 16 and Juventus in the quarter-finals.
Now they are in sight of the final as well as being neck-and -neck with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch title race.
"It's all going quite fast," Van der Beek said, before a training session in Tottenham's new stadium which was open for the public to attend for the full duration.
"Spurs are a great team with great players and we will have to be at the same level or better than we were against Real and Juventus in the last two rounds."
Ajax might never have a better chance to reclaim the trophy before the so-called European heavyweights close in to pick off their best talent - as has happened in the case of midfielder Frenkie de Jong who will join Barcelona this summer.
But while it is young Dutch talent that has spearheaded Ajax's march, Ten Hag said it was a couple of former Premier League players who have provided the winning mentality.
Serbian Dusan Tadic joined from Southampton while Daley Blind has thrived since returning to the Netherlands after a spell with Manchester United.
"We had a good young team but a lack of experience," Ten Hag said. "It was a deliberate policy to sign players from the Premier League, with the knowledge and experience they bring."
Ajax are looking for their first win over Tottenham, having lost both legs of their European Cup Winners' Cup tie in 1981.

The latest flashpoint comes amid a long-running row between the two countries over sports broadcasting, which has seen Qatar accuse Saudi of facilitating "industrial-scale" piracy of its programmes through a channel called "beoutQ", a claim Riyadh denies.
It also comes amid an ongoing bitter diplomatic Gulf crisis which has seen Qatar boycotted for the past 21 months by neighbouring former allies including Saudi Arabia.
"In response to the extraordinary announcement by the AFC... beIN is set to launch a major international legal dispute against the Confederation for material breach of its multi-million dollar broadcast agreement." beIN added the move was "clearly political".
The Doha-based sports broadcasting giant has held a contract with the AFC since 2013 to cover Champions League games as well as the Asian Cup tournament.
BeIN is thought to spend around US$38 million (S$51.5 million) a year on the contract, which is up for renewal in 2020.
In a statement, the AFC said it had made the move to "protect the rights of its commercial and broadcast partners".
Matches will be live-streamed on geo-blocked digital channels including Facebook Live, added the AFC.
A statement from the Saudi Press Agency said the AFC, in a letter to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, was cancelling "the monopoly of beIN sports channels".
The news agency said the decision was based on "serious legal and systematic violations" committed by beIN.
This will not be the first legal action threatened by beIN.
Last October it launched a US$1-billion compensation claim against Saudi broadcasters over the issue of piracy.
The latest row comes just weeks before the AFC elects its new president.
One of the three candidates is Qatar's Saoud al-Mohannadi.

Football: West Ham beat Fulham 2-0 to post fourth win in a row

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham won their fourth successive Premier League game to add to Fulham’s woes at Craven Cottage on Saturday (Dec 15), beating their cross-London rivals 2-0 with goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio.
Fulham, yet to keep a clean sheet this season, stayed rooted to the bottom of the table with nine points from 17 games, while the Hammers rose to ninth place on 24 points.
New Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri had been looking to build on the four points his side took in their first two home games under his charge.
His players created most of the early pressure, with strikers Andre Schurlle and Aboubakar Kamara firing in shots and creating chances within the opening 10 minutes.
But it was Manuel Pellegrini’s visitors who took the lead after 17 minutes when midfielder Felipe Anderson sprang past Fulham’s Denis Odoi and fed the ball back to Snodgrass, who blasted his left-footed shot high into the top left corner.
Anderson helped West Ham to double their lead 12 minutes later, crossing in from near the sideline to Javier Hernandez. The Mexican striker nodded the ball back behind him to Antonio, who brought it down and quickly slotted it between the legs of onrushing Cottagers keeper Sergio Rico.
West Ham have won every game in December, their best run in the Premier League since February 2014.
“In the first half, you create a few chances against a team like Fulham, who are scrapping for points, you have to take them and we did. It was a great performance and four wins on the bounce is always good,” said Snodgrass.
The contrast could not be starker with their first four games of the season, all of which they lost, and the Hammers are now just two points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.
Ranieri was philosophical in defeat although he knows Fulham’s fortunes will have to turn around soon if they are to avoid an instant return to the Championship.
“We have to stay calm, reflect and try to work harder, harder and harder,” said the Italian. “In a bad moment, it is important to stay together. We have a very good group, I’m sure we will react soon.”

Football: Guardiola defends Man City's youth record following Diaz departure

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has defended his side's youth development record after academy graduate Brahim Diaz left for Real Madrid, saying he only wants to work with players who are committed to the club.
The 19-year-old Diaz completed a move to the Spanish capital on Monday, following in the footsteps of English winger Jadon Sancho, who left City in 2017 for Borussia Dortmund to make a huge impact in the German Bundesliga.
City failed to keep both players at the Etihad Stadium due to a lack of first-team opportunities but Guardiola said youngsters must be patient if they are to make a breakthrough at any of the Europe's elite clubs.
"They win the opportunity (to play) on the field but you have to take a look at all the big clubs in Europe how many young players are in the first team," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of City's League Cup semi-final first-leg against Burton Albion on Wednesday (Jan 9).
"The young players need time. David Silva, for example, was loaned to others before he became what he is right now, before he came us. Some have patience, some trust what the club want to do, and some don't."
England under-21 playmaker Phil Foden committed his long-term future to City last month, having received a public backing from Guardiola this season.
"Like I said many times, I don't want people that don't want to stay here," the Spanish coach added.
"We did with Brahim everything we have done with Phil (Foden) and with Jadon - important players and we did absolutely everything. The only one who decides to stay is Phil."

Foden is set to feature against Burton with Guardiola having almost his full squad available to cope with the demands of the Premier League and domestic cup competitions this month.
Guardiola said French full back Benjamin Mendy, who is on the sidelines with a knee injury, could return to first-team action in two-to-three weeks.
"He's training alone," Guardiola added.
"Two weeks, three weeks maybe (until he returns). Everybody else is fit."
City will return to league action against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday as they continue to chase Liverpool, who are four points clear at the top of the table.
