Qatar in talks to buy a stake in Leeds
LONDON • Qatar held advanced discussions to buy a stake in storied English Championship football team Leeds United on Monday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussions.
The gas-rich Gulf state, which has gained an outsized influence in global football, stunned the sports world when it secured the rights to host the World Cup in 2022.
Since that vote in 2010, it has been among the most consequential footballing nations, buying and investing huge amounts to turn French champions Paris Saint-Germain into a powerhouse team, and also becoming the one of the biggest acquirers of football rights through its beIN Sports network.
The move for Leeds, who missed out on a return to the Premier League after losing their play-off semi-final to Derby last month, would be Qatar's first foray into English football, and most likely will lead to further scrutiny into its affairs at home and abroad.
Human rights groups have drawn attention to the treatment of workers building their World Cup stadiums, while there have been allegations of wrongdoing over the way in which Qatar persuaded Fifa members during the bidding process for the showpiece event.
The talks with Leeds, who were relegated from the top flight in 2004 and have languished in the wilderness since, are at an advanced stage.
They stem from a personal relationship between the club's majority owner, Andrea Radrizzani, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the businessman who fronts state-backed Qatar Sports Investments.
A close friend of Qatar Emir Tamim Hamad Al-Thani, he is also the president of PSG and chairman of beIN Sports.
The initial talks with Qatar involve a stake sale, though there could be a provision for a full buyout later on, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.
An investment in Leeds would be Qatar's third in European football teams - as well as PSG, they own Belgian side Eupen.

LONDON • Christian Eriksen yesterday confirmed the worst-kept secret at Tottenham - that he wants to take on a new challenge at another club this summer.
The Denmark midfielder, who has been at Spurs since joining from Ajax in 2013, has one year to run on his current contract and has shown no inclination to renew for another cycle in north London.
Spurs cannot afford to allow him to run down his deal and leave as a free agent next summer, given his high value at arguably the peak of his career and the fact that they have repayments to make on their new stadium.
Consequently, they have let it be known in recent weeks that he would be available at a price, albeit an extremely high one.
Chairman Daniel Levy has quoted £130 million (S$225.4 million) for him, which might seem like wishful thinking, but it offers an impression of where he is drawing the lines for negotiations.
While the 27-year-old Eriksen has repeatedly refused to discuss his next move with reporters, he told Danish daily Ekstra Bladet that he was now "at a stage of my career where I would like to try something new".
He said: "I have the deepest respect for everything that is happening at Tottenham and it would not be something negative to stay.
"I hope that something will be decided this summer. That is the plan. In football, you never know when there could be a decision like that. It could be at any point. The best thing is always for it to happen quickly but in football, things take time."
Eriksen has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, who are looking to add marquee signings when the transfer window opens on July 1 after a desperately disappointing season, and he admitted the Spanish giants were a "step up" from Spurs.
He added: "Then it would take Real Madrid picking up the phone and making contact with Tottenham and say that they want Christian.
"And that they haven't done as far as I know. It all depends on Daniel Levy and there has to be another club too. Or I will sit down myself at the table and negotiate a new contract. You can't set a date yourself.
"There aren't many boxes that Tottenham don't tick so if I have to move away, it would have to be a step up."
Asked whether he would seek to run down his contract, Eriksen said: "That is difficult to say. It depends on the possibilities. If there are no exciting offers, why shouldn't I stay at Tottenham?
"If I then sign a new contract, (it) depends on the conditions."

Chelsea had to work hard to break down Palace who had taken seven points in their previous three matches, including a shock win over champions Manchester City, but seemed content to allow their visitors most of the possession.
After a sterile first 35 minutes, Willian smacked the post with a swinging free kick and Ross Barkley hit the same upright soon afterwards with an acrobatic overhead effort.
Kante broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when his darting run into the Palace penalty area was spotted by defender David Luiz who fed the France World Cup winner to score from close range.

BERLIN (AFP) - Relegation-threatened Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart have sacked coach Markus Weinzierl following a 6-0 humiliation at the hands of fellow strugglers Augsburg on Saturday (April 20).
Weinzierl had lost 15 of his 23 games in charge of Stuttgart since taking the reins in October last year.
Stuttgart have been locked in the relegation play-off place for a number of weeks, and have not won since March.
They are now six points adrift of safety, and ten points behind Augsburg, who inflicted a sobering defeat on them on Saturday.
"After the highly disappointing game in Augsburg, we have come to the conclusion that we need a clean break," said Stuttgart's head of sport Thomas Hitzlsperger in a statement.

Weinzierl appeared to be aware of his impending fate after the heavy defeat.

 
"I didn't make a good case for myself today," he admitted.
Under-19 boss Nico Willig will now be charged with guiding the team to survival as interim coach.
With a bottom-three finish now more likely than ever, Willig will be primarily concerned with ensuring that Stuttgart do not drop from the play-off spot into the automatic relegation places.
They are currently just three points ahead of second-from-bottom Nuremberg, with four games still to play.
