Football: Nantes take Sala transfer dispute to Fifa

NANTES, France (AFP) - French club Nantes have referred their dispute with Cardiff City over the transfer fee of Emiliano Sala to Fifa, football's governing body confirmed on Wednesday (Feb 27).
The clubs are wrangling over payment of the fee following the tragic death of Argentinian Sala in an airplane accident in January.
Nantes referred the matter to the sport's global body after the Welsh side declined to pay an initial €6 million (S$9.2 million) of the €17 million total fee.
"We can confirm that we have received yesterday evening (Tuesday) a claim from FC Nantes against Cardiff City in connection with the transfer of Emiliano Sala," a Fifa spokesman said.
"We are looking into the matter and consequently we have no further comments at this stage."
Cardiff were due to pay the initial €6 million once the transfer had been registered but the club said they wanted to wait for the results of the investigation into the accident before transferring any funds.
"Cardiff City remains committed to ensuring fairness and accountability with respect to the agreement between Cardiff City and FC Nantes, but first and foremost the relevant authorities must be allowed to determine the facts surrounding this tragedy. It is inappropriate to comment further at this stage," Cardiff said in a statement.
According to the French club, the 28-year-old's move from France had been completed and an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) issued.
As the ITC had been registered and Sala had been confirmed as a Cardiff player, according to Nantes the Welsh club were obligated to pay for the transfer.

MANDATE EXPIRED

However, Cardiff are concerned about possible irregularities involving the flight from Nantes to Cardiff which resulted in Sala's death.
Pilot David Ibbotson, 59, was flying Sala to the Premier League outfit on Jan 21 when the accident happened.
Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said on Monday the plane carrying Sala did not have a commercial licence.
But it said the journey would have been allowed as a "private" flight in which costs are shared between pilot and passenger.
It added that the basis on which Sala was a passenger had not been established.
Football agent Mark McKay had a mandate from Nantes to negotiate the transfer of the professional contract between the two clubs.
Nantes has said that the mandate had expired by the time Sala boarded the flight as he had already signed for Cardiff City.
The investigators also said that since the pilot's logbook and licence were not recovered, it was unclear whether Ibbotson was authorised to fly at night.
Ibbotson's body has not been found.

Football: Incumbent Infantino the sole candidate for Fifa presidency in June vote

LAUSANNE (AFP) - Fifa president Gianni Infantino is set to serve a second term after world football's governing body said on Wednesday (Feb 6) that he would be the only candidate for June's vote.
The 48-year-old has been in charge of Fifa since February 2016, after succeeding the disgraced Sepp Blatter following the corruption scandal which rocked the organisation.
The election will take place on June 5 in Paris ahead of the women's World Cup.
Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega had announced his intention to stand against Infantino, but failed to garner the required support of five of Fifa's 211 member federations.
Infantino has introduced plans to increase the World Cup from 32 teams to 48 from 2026, with the possibility to bring forward the expansion to the 2022 edition in Qatar.
A decision is expected to be taken next March after a study into the feasibility of holding an extended tournament in the Gulf state.
Michel Platini's former right-hand man at Uefa is also hoping for an enlarged, 24-team Club World Cup from 2021.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin of Slovenia, who will be re-elected on Thursday also as the sole candidate, is opposed to the idea.

Gianni Infantino was re-elected as president of the football governing body FIFA for a four-year term until 2023. The 49-year-old Swiss national was elected by acclamation as the sole candidate at the FIFA Congress in Paris.

Football: Aston Villa meet Derby in play-off battle for 170 million prize

LONDON (REUTERS) - Aston Villa face Derby County in the Championship play-off final on Monday (May 27) with both clubs desperate for a return to the Premier League in a game billed as the richest in world football with at least £170 million (S$297 million) on the line.
Villa have been out of the top flight for three seasons while Derby have been stuck in the second tier of English football since relegation in 2008.
A 10-match winning streak during the run-in propelled Dean Smith's Villa into the playoffs where they got past West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.
"The key thing is momentum," said former Brentford manager Smith, who took over from Steve Bruce at Villa Park in October. "I feel we have a lot of that going into it (the final), given our run towards the end of the season and our two dominant play-off games. We can take it into the final."
Derby produced a brilliant performance with a 4-2 win over Leeds United in their play-off second leg at Elland Road earning them a place at Wembley.
Derby manager Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea and England midfielder who is in his first season as a manager, believes his team are well suited for the high-pressure encounter.
"The 'Cup' football feeling has been good for us. We've had to get results for a while now, going back to probably the QPR game (a 2-0 home win on April 22). We'll need big game mentality on Monday," he said.
Lampard is up against his former club and international team-mate John Terry, who is Smith's assistant at Villa.
The two clubs have proud histories. Seven-time English champions Villa were European Cup winners in 1982, while Derby were twice English champions in the 1970s.
Champions Norwich City and runners-up Sheffield United have already secured promotion to the top flight and the rewards for Villa and Derby joining them are eye-watering.
According to analysis from Deloitte's Sports Business Group, promotion will bring an increase in revenue of at least £170 million, rising to a minimum of £300 million if the play-off winners avoid relegation in their first season.
The £170 million includes £95 million in revenue from playing in the Premier League in 2019-20, mostly from broadcast and commercial revenue, and a total of £75 million in parachute payments in 2020-21 and 2021-22 if they go straight down.
However, the £170 million rises to at least £300 million if they survive their first season in the top flight.

Football: Osako double saves the day for Japan in 3-2 Asian Cup win over Turkmenistan

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Yuya Osako netted a quickfire double as former champions Japan survived a scare to beat Turkmenistan 3-2 in their Asian Cup opener on Wednesday (Jan 9).
The Blue Samurai reached the last 16 of last year's World Cup but they had to fight back from a goal down at halftime in their Group F clash in Abu Dhabi.
Turkmenistan captain Arslan Amanov put the underdogs ahead after 26 minutes, unleashing a ferocious long-range drive that arrowed into the top corner.
But Osako produced a smart turn and finish inside the box to equalise for Japan 10 minutes into the second half after sustained pressure from the four-time Asian champions.
The Werder Bremen striker put Japan in front four minutes later, tapping into an empty net after Yuto Nagatomo's dinked pass over goalkeeper Mammet Orazmuhammedow.
Ritsu Doan added a deflected third after 70 minutes, but Ahmet Atayev smashed in a penalty 11 minutes from time for the Emeralds to ensure a nervous finish for the Japanese.
